Tottenham’s midfielder Dele Alli came under fire after posting a controversial video to Snapchat 4 months ago.
In the snap, you see Alli wearing a face mask when he quickly moves the camera to a man of Asian appearance before zooming into a bottle of hand sanitiser. After posting, he realised that the snap “could cause potential upset”, and so he “very quickly” removed it from his private account. However, it came as a shock betrayal to Alli when a friend of his sold the video from his private account to the media.
Dele Alli went to a hearing following the snap where the FA ordered a £50,000 fine and he will be undertaking an education course. Alli will also miss Spurs’ home match against Manchester United.
In response to this, the midfielder released a statement:
“I would like to apologise again for any offense caused by my behaviour. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that now has affected us more than we could ever imagine”
“I am grateful that the FA have not ruled my actions as racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be more mindful of our words and actions and how they can be perceived by others”.
